Junior Enters a New Race

The harness horse known as Pay Me To Knight, also known around his stables as Junior, has won me a fair chunk of change over the years. He’s a decorated trotter at Saratoga Harness, and I’ve been known to put $20 on his nose every time I know he’s on the track. Hey, you’ve got a gambling system, so do I.

Last year, I was snapping shots with my infrared-modded Nikon Df camera, and I captured this image of Junior warming up before a big race.

Pay Me To Knight. Nikon Df camera modified for infrared; with 55mm f/1.2 lens and Kolari InfraChrome filter. Photo (c) 2024 Chuck Miller, all rights reserved.

Damn, that’s a swank photo. Junior’s got one teeny tiny toe on the turf as he trots around the Saratoga Harness half mile track. And that’s got to be his owner, Doug Maura, on the bike. Or bucket. Or sulkey. I’m never sure what to call it.

And those infrared-tinted orange and coral trees and grass in the background … that just looks surreal.

Yeah. I’m putting this in the Competition Season 2025 pile. At least in categories that are designated for infrared or alternative processing.

I mean, are you going to tell me that Junior can’t win a different type of blue ribbon?

Good. As long as we’re all in agreement. 😀
